May 21st ~ Weekly eNews

Times are a changing:  Mark your calendars!  We will begin our summer worship schedule next Sunday, May 28.  Our services will be at 8:00 & 10:00 AM.

The Annual Parish Picnic is TODAY after the 11 a.m. service and we'll have fun in the sun for all ages!

The picnic will take place on the Lawn. St. Matthias' will provide hamburgers and hotdogs and lemonade and water. Please bring a dish to share or just join us!  Remember - we need everyone’s help for clean up!

Lemonade on the Lawn will begin on May 28 – following the  10 a.m. service.  We are going to have Lemonade on the Lawn (or in the Commons) every other week this year. There is a sign up poster in the Commons. Please contact Mary Morsch with questions. Remember- we’ll provide the lemonade for you to make and you provide the cookies. More information on this tradition will be in the next Channel.

Church Office Closed:  The Church Office will be closed on Monday, May 29 in observance of Memorial Day.

Summer Office Hours:  Starting Memorial Day week the church office hours will change to Monday through Thursday 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM and closed on Fridays.

  • We will celebrate Pentecost on June 4 with our traditional Strawberry Sunday. We’ll have strawberry shortcake after the 11 a.m. service. Please bring either poundcake or sliced strawberries with sugar. Fellowship will set up the strawberry shortcake buffet and punch. There is a sign up poster in the Commons for pound cake, strawberries, and help with serving.
  • PENTECOST PROJECT!!: For Pentecost this year, we would like to replicate, in a fashion, the experience of the first Pentecost. If you know the Lord’s Prayer in another language, please provide a written copy of it to the office either by email or by hard-copy.  Whatever is submitted will be part of the Pentecost bulletin publications so everyone can (try to) read them! Then, during the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer during the Eucharist at both services, we  will all simultaneously recite the Lord’s Prayer in as many different languages as we can muster.
  • Pentecost celebration:  On Sunday, June 4th, as part of our festival celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Jesus, we would like all our young parishioners to join in the processional.  There will also be a special object handed out before the service so everyone can participate in celebrating the church’s birthday!  We will do this at both services so please arrive a few minutes early so we can organize our children/youth for the processional.

PARISH-WIDE RETREAT!! The deadline for registering has been extended through Sunday, May 28. If we have not met a minimum of 30 attendees, the retreat will be indefinitely postponed until we can achieve that minimum. The theme of the retreat is, “Imago Dei - In the Image of God—the implications of this for our faith lives.” This retreat will be a mix of fun activities, rest, workshops, and worship. Participants will be able to mix and match as they choose. To register, simply submit a refundable deposit of $35 per person with a notation that this is for the retreat. We are looking forward to this fun and exciting event !

VBS Volunteers:  Our Mighty Fortress VBS program is not until July, but volunteer sign-ups are happening right now.  Sign-up sheets are located in the office hallway (same location as CARITAS ones) and include job descriptions and hours.  Please reflect and pray on how you could help with this ministry that nourishes our St. Matthias family as well as the whole community.

Save the Date:  The Progressive Dinner is coming!  Put August 19 on your calendar.  In the next few weeks you’ll betting some hints about the theme for this year.  If you would like to host the dinner portion, please let Veronica Kirkland or Jill Griffith know.

Youth Group : Please see the website - - for a list of dates for upcoming events scheduled through August!

Thank You: To our St. Matthias’ family, THANK YOU, for your generous outpouring of Agape Love in the form of prayers and cookies, cookies, and more cookies!  The men and women of Sussex and CVCU were richly blessed during their Kairos Weekends. Lives were restored, forgiveness was given and received, hope and joy replaced despair and sorrow.  Through your love and support, prisons became Holy Ground. May God bless you for being a part of this amazing ministry.   In humble gratitude, Debbie Vance and Scott Volmer.

Teacher Recognition

Today we recognize our parishioners who give their time and talents to the younger members of our congregation.  We are truly thankful for their dedication, their energy, and their patience!  Please join us in the Commons after the 11:00 am service for some cake honoring the folks who give their time to this important ministry.
